How the Organization Operates

Intize has existed since 2005 and is politically and religiously independent. The day-to-day operations are managed by Verksamhetsgruppen, who are employed by Intize. Our mentors, nomination committee, and board members all work voluntarily, and get not monetary compensation.

Our main financial supporters:
Chalmers University of Technology, Natur & Kultur, and the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket).

Our Purpose

Our purpose is to inspire a greater interest in mathematics and to improve knowledge and mathematical thinking skills.

We achieve this mainly through volunteer-based mentorship, where students help others learn mathematics. This will, among other things, lead to improved self-esteem and opens up new opportunities in life.

Our Vision for Society

• Everyone in Sweden should have more equal and better opportunities to learn mathematics
• Mathematics as a school subject, as well as higher education, should feel less intimidating
• Interest in mathematics and the teaching profession should increase in society
• Mentorship as a tool for knowledge-sharing should be used in more contexts
• Intize should be something the students themselves seek out

Openness Openness means tolerance and acceptance of everyone involved in Intize’s activities. Everyone should feel welcome at Intize. Intize shall actively strive to be a transparent organisation that gives its members insight into the association.

The organisation is open to constructive feedback and responds to it with respect.

Growth At Intize, there is a desire to learn, improve, and move forward, both as individuals and as an organisation. Growth means continuously developing oneself as a mentor or mentee. To grow as an organisation, Intize must remain responsive to feedback and evaluate its activities.

Inspiration At Intize, we share and provide new perspectives on mathematics that inspires. Seeing our mentees grow inspires us. Intize creates meetings between people and offers new insights and experiences.

Engagement Intize is built on voluntary and willing engagement.

Long term Intize is guided by the ambition of lifelong learning where our efforts create long-lasting impact. Intize wants to build long-term relationships and work to ensure that knowledge is retained over time.

Participation Intize encourages members to take an active role in the organisation. Participation includes a sense of community and the feeling of being part of something larger than oneself.

What we do

The Mentorship

The mentorship program is free of charge and is based on long-term knowledge exchange in mathematics through personal meetings. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background, ambition, or skill level.

Mentor groups consist of 1–2 mentors and 3–6 mentees. They meet for 1–2 hours per week at a mutually agreed time and place, usually at the mentor’s school.

The content of each session is decided jointly by the mentor and the mentees. An Intize mentor is someone with stronger mathematical knowledge who is at least one educational level above their mentees.

We have three types of mentorships:

• University students* mentoring upper secondary (gymnasiet) students
• Upper secondary students mentoring lower secondary students (högstadiet)
• Mentorship for particularly gifted children in compulsory school (grundskolan)

*This person may also be a PhD student, a recent graduate, or working.

Events

During the year we organise different kinds of events for different target groups, for example:

• Intizedagarna: Lectures and a large study session ahead of national mathematics exams (nationella proven)
• Intize Kreativa Sommarmatte: A fun five day summer program with preparatory math for students entering upper secondary school (gymnasiet)

We also organise meetings and events for gifted children 1–2 times per academic year. All gifted children who have a mentor or are on the waiting list for a mentor are invited.

Drop-in

Math help where anyone studying mathematics at high school level (högstadie- och gymnasienivå) can come for help. Open three days a week (Monday, Thursday, and Saturday) at Vera Sandbergs allé 8.

Chalmers course

Together with the Department of Mathematical Sciences, we co-organise the course Matematik och Samhälle (MVE370) at Chalmers.
